The milking sheep lambs

This little lamb is born from a texel/blue faced leicester cross mated with kracken the zwarble. We got a ram lamb and ewe lamb bother very pretty lambs. Just born this evening. more pics to follow.

Down in the lambing shed hasnt been pure joy. We had to have the vet last night as the first ewe that lamb was ill with prolapse and didnt make it. Leaving her lamb without a mum. Lamb is doing well although needs bottle fed every 4 hours.  Its also getting a few sneaky cuddles.

We have identified schmallenberg virus. (SBV) Once a sheep has had it they are immune from it in the future. Its thought to be past on by insect bites to ewes in pregnancy. No symptoms of the virus and no risk to humans in sheep milk.

If the ewe gets bitten by an insect carrying the disease at day 20-50 it causes dead or deformed lambs at birth. Two ewes lambed  have lost a lamb each which looks very much like SBV. The other two ewes that have lambed have been successful so fingers crossed the rest are ok.

This farming life isnt easy.
